Below you will find answers to commonly asked questions related to the incorporation process, municipal services and costs.
Who Currently Provides Granite’s Municipal Services?
(unincorporated Salt Lake County)
The residents of the Granite Community that live in unincorporated Salt Lake County have their municipal services provided from a variety of sources.

If Granite incorporates the City Council would decide whether to continue to use the existing providers for these services or whether to find or create an alternative source for these services.

Police Protection​
Granite residents pay a property tax to the Salt Lake Valley Law Enforcement Service Area (SLVESA). Since its inception the funds have been used to support the Unified Police Department, which provides police serviced to many areas of Salt Lake County, including unincorporated areas like the Granite Community. Due to recent state legislation, policing of Granite is being transferred to the Salt Lake County Sheriff. Funding will still be provided through SLVESA.

What if Granite Incorporates?
The Granite City Council would decide whether to continue the contract with the Salt Lake County Sheriff, or to contract with the Unified Police Department, or to establish the City’s own police department.
Fire Protection
Granite residents pay a property tax to the Unified Fire Service Area (UFSA) which is a Special Service District that provides fire protection to a number of areas in Salt Lake County, including Granite.

What if Granite Incorporates?
The Granite City Council would decide whether to
continue the contract with the Unified Fire Authority or to contract with another fire
department, or to establish the City’s own fire department.
Fee Based Municipal Services and Utilities
Many of the municipal services and utilities are provided on a fee basis. Residents pay directly to the provider. These include:
Electricity – Rocky Mountain Power
Natural Gas – Dominion Energy
Sewer – Cottonwood Improvement District
Water – Sandy City Water
Garbage Collection – Wasatch Front Waste and Recycling
What if Granite Incorporates?
The Fee based services would continue to be provided
by the current providers.
The Greater Salt Lake Municipal Services District (MSD)​
The MSD was created in 2016 for the purpose of providing municipal services to the Metro
Townships and the Unincorporated areas of Salt Lake County, including Granite.

The MSD has been providing municipal services to Grante since 2016. Those services include:
Planning and Zoning
Animal Control Services
Parks Maintenance and Operations
Public Works – Construction and Maintenance of Rights-of Way
Including snow plowing
Business Licensing
Code Enforcement

What if Granite Incorporates?
The City of Granite would have the option to become a member of the MSD. The mayor of Granite or a member of the City Council would be given a board seat at the MSD and the MSD would continue to provide these and other services to the City of Granite.

​Magna, Kearns, Copperton, White City, and Emigration Canyon are all members of the MSD. The MSD provides or assists in providing most of the city services for these cities. They could provide the same services to Granite City.

Granite City Council, continue to be provided by the same parties that are currently
providing them with no expected increase in costs.
